Victorian-sired Stakes Success in September

During September Victorian stallions made their mark once again with stakes winners by Alabama Express, Street Boss and Star Witness to kickstart a strong spring carnival.


Alabama Lass (Alabama Express x Tabliope)

Victorian-bred and -sired Alabama Lass (Alabama Express x Tabliope) proved too good for her rivals in the Group 3 Gold Trail Stakes at Hastings. The three-year-old filly bred by Rifa Mustang and trained by Ken and Bev Kelso, became the second stakes winner for Yulong’s second-season sire, Alabama Express. She has now amassed three wins from four starts proving a promising start to her career. Alabama Lass was purchased for A$120,000 at the 2023 Premier Yearling Sale, through the draft of Shadow Hill Thoroughbreds. Alabama Express is standing at Yulong for $55,000 (inc.GST).


Traffic Warden (Street Boss x Efficiently)

Victorian-sired Traffic Warden (Street Boss x Efficiently) stormed to victory in the Group 2 Run To The Rose at Rosehill under Zac Lloyd. The three-year-old colt, by Darley’s Victorian-based sire Street Boss, is a six-time group placegetter from eight starts, bringing his career earnings to an impressive A$1,012,200. His first stakes win came at the Group 2 Sires’ Produce Stakes. followed by a second in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes. Street Boss stands at Darley Northwood Park for $66,000 (inc.GST).

Bellatrix Star (Star Witness x Alana’s Party)

Victorian-bred and -sired Bellatrix Star (Star Witness x Alana’s Party) notches up back-to-back stakes wins with victory in the Group 3 Scarborough Stakes and Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes, for trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson. She was purchased at the 2023 New Zealand National Yearling Sales for NZ$80,000. Bred by Rob Dunnett, Bellatrix Star has now won four out of eight starts amassing A$438,463 in career earnings. The three-year-old filly took home the A$10,000 VOBIS Silver Bonus from the win at Moonee Valley as well as a A$7,000 VOBIS Silver bonus from Flemington. Star Witness stands at Widden Stud for $8,800 (inc.GST).

Another Wil (Street Boss x Arohanui)

Victorian-bred and -sired Another Wil (Street Boss x Arohanui) delivered a strong finish to win the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes at Caulfield for trainer Ciaron Maher and ridden by Jamie Kah. Bred by Mrs J. Thompson and by Darley’s Street Boss, the chestnut gelding has been a force on the track, winning seven of his ten starts and accumulating A$587,675 in prize money. Street Boss stands at Darley Northwood Park for $66,000 (inc.GST).


Southport Tycoon (Written Tycoon x Ready to Rule)

Victorian-sired Southport Tycoon (Written Tycoon x Ready to Rule) flew home fast and late to take the win in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes for trainer Ciaron Maher. Southport Tycoon backs up his Group 1 success from earlier this year with another impressive Group performance proving a promising future ahead. The four-year-old, chestnut colt brings his total career earnings to a staggering A$2,093,350 with a total of seven placings out of ten starts. Bred by Daandine Stud and sold through their own draft, Southport Tycoon was a A$300,000 purchase at the 2022 Gold Coast Yearling Sales. Written Tycoon stands at Yulong for a private fee.
